Is A Second-Story Addition The Choice For You?

Posted November 13, 2019 by Gabriel Posternak

If you’re searching for more room or looking to gain more space, a second-story addition may be the right choice for you. Some families look to their basements or attics for additional space. But, what if you don’t have a basement or attic? There are many ways you can increase the size of your own home in order to accommodate your life and your family.

Popular Reasons to add a Second Story

For some families, it’s just a matter of a growing and enlarging family. For others, their college students are returning home after graduation and need a place to call their own. Mom, dad, and student want the extra privacy. Or maybe the homeowners are baby boomers and need to move their parents in with them to keep an eye on their health and well-being. Elders are living longer and longer these days.

A second story may also be right for you if you are part of a blended family. With divorce, many people in their middle years meet, fall in love, and find someone special to share their lives with. This may mean blended families move in together.

Considerations

When it comes to house additions, explore all options. Consider the possibility of a sunroom addition, an attic remodel, or a basement makeover. A porch addition or makeover might even be a consideration. If none of these options work for you and building out is also not an option because of the cost involved, then building up might be your only other option.

Things to Note

When it comes to a purchase or decision as big as a second story addition, you’ll want to keep in mind several factors:

  • What will the cost be, compare and contrast estimates, find reliable contractors who are licensed, insured, and bonded.
  • How long do you plan to stay in your house?
  • What special permits do you need?
  • How will your neighbors react?
  • What does your homeowners’ insurance policy say about the addition? How much more might you pay in premiums with the new addition?

With more and more families and homeowners facing changes such as college students returning and, unfortunately, having so much debt, these students may be around a lot longer than any of them had anticipated. A second-story addition might just be the answer you are looking for.
