If you’re serious about going green in your home, then you’ve definitely entertained the idea to decorate it, eco-friendly style. But where should you start? There are some many options to choose from and many things to do that’s easy to get lost. Fear no more! Here are 6 neat tricks that will make your home shine with a sustainable glow!
1 – Follow the 3 Rs
Recycle, reduce, reuse. These 3 simple words encapsulate everything about green decor. Recycling pallets to make new furniture, reusing old bottles to make lights or vases, or reducing the amount of things you buy to decorate your rooms will put you on the right path to sustainable decor. How to make the most out of this trick? Your creativity is the only limit! Think how many of the things you’re throwing away can be repainted and repurposed and dare to try new things!

2 – Use natural fabrics
Given how many toxic components are present in carpets and curtains, picking natural fabrics is a must for your health’s sake. Cotton, linen and organic wool are ideal choices, since their textures provide a great look and feel for curtains, upholstery, rugs and even bed clothing. They come in lots of colors and patterns, so there’s surely an option for your home waiting out there.

3 – Go with green materials
This sounds insanely obvious but yet is good to remember it when picking new objects for decorating. Cork, paper and cardboard might seem like things that belong to an art class but they are used more and more by interior designers because of their versatility and sustainability. Another advise – reduce your plastic use to a minimum (or get rid of it altogether!). The only acceptable use for it is when you recycle plastic objects instead of throwing them away.
4 – Free yourself from VOC paints
Indoor air is three times more polluted than outdoor air, and according to the EPA, is one of the leading hazards to human health. Paints and finishes are among the leading causes. The solution? Choosing low-VOC and zero-VOC paints and finishes, especially those made from natural raw ingredients such as water, plant oils and resins, plant dyes and essential oils, which are the safest for your health.

5 – Make the most of your available lights
If you’ve been reading us for some time, you’ve surely know this by now – replace all your lights with energy-efficient LED lighting, that will cut your energy bills and provide you with a unique atmosphere. But don’t stop there! Rethink your approach to the windows in each room of your house. The idea is to make the most out of natural light, so you get rid of dark curtains and paint your walls with lighter colors, since they are way better at reflecting the natural light. If you want to go all the way, consider rearranging your windows and installing new ones for maximum effect.
6 – Don’t forget about the true green!
Of course, we’re talking about indoor plants. They look beautiful, combine with pretty much everything and are great for your health. You can arrange a vertical garden, pick aromatic plants for a captivating fragrance garden or even get a Japanese vibe going with bonsais or kokedama plants. If you choose the right plant and the perfect place to locate it, you’ll see how your room gets brighter by the minute!
