How to make your remodel last for years

Time and time again, we’ve said that you shouldn't get too trendy when remodeling. The reasons are obvious – once the trend is dead, so is your home’s atmosphere. And it can even get worse: use a hip but disposable material today and you’ll be regretting it for years to come. Of course, that doesn’t mean you can’t jump on some trends. But you should know how to pick them. That’s why we built this checklist that will help you remodel with a look that you’ll love for a lifetime.

1 – Go classic

It doesn’t matter if you’re choosing kitchen cabinets or living room furniture, you can’t be wrong if you pick classic designs. Surely, doing this will look less bold but it won’t also look dated after a couple of years. You know why they call it classics? Because they never go out of style.

2 – Think function before beauty

Many people are after the wow factor and ignore everything else. Don’t do that! The layout is key as is having enough storage and the right path to let people move around your home. You’ll be walking your remodeled room on a daily basis and if you fail to make it work for you, you’ll be annoyed every time you have to walk through it – until you remodel it again.

3 – Spend a little more

Complain as much as you want about the prices on some materials, but know this – most of them are worth it. It’s not just a matter of looks, because high-quality materials are also very durable, something you should never neglect when remodeling. Think like this: you may spend more now but you’ll save what you’d spend in future repairs and replacements. Besides, those materials look great!

4 – Know where to use bold colors

Have you seen those posts talking about color trends for this year and that year and whatnot? Well, they are written yearly for a reason: people grow tired of some palettes very quickly. That’s especially true when it comes to bold colors, so you should be careful when using them. The best thing you can do is balance them out with more calming tones. Use the more traditional colors in walls, ceilings and furniture and leave the bold choices for small accents through accessories and decor.

5 – You can’t be wrong about windows

Windows are great to bring more natural light into any room, provide a new sense of space and dramatically change any room. If you have the space and want to add more windows, just do it. The only suggestion you should keep in mind is that you should pick high-quality windows to keep the noise out and to prevent the new windows from affecting the temperature of the rooms in which you install them.

There’s nothing too complicated about making your remodel last – you just have to be mindful about your choices. Perhaps you should also consider a reputable remodeling contractor to ensure your remodel is top notch and, after that, you’ll have a home that you’ll love for decades.
