Adding a deck – the home project that keeps on giving

No home is truly complete without an outdoor space to chill on the weekends or after work – especially in days as hot as the ones of this summer! That’s why so many people are considering adding a deck to their homes and its demand is steadily rising: it’s a simple and elegant way to boost any backyard appeal. But that’s not it, as decks are also great for other reasons.

Being a perfect way to enjoy some outdoor life is obviously the most evident. Having some comfortable chairs, an outdoor oven and some plants is enough to gather with friends and family to catch a little sunshine. And even if that isn’t your kind of thing, ceilings, fans, TVs, heating and A/C, fireplaces and more can take your indoor life to your backyard so you can relax while watching your favorite show and enjoying the pleasure of being out.

Believe it or not, decks can increase your comfort by providing a function that you may not even know you have – a flat area in a sloped terrain. If your home sits atop your basement or is above the ground, then a platform deck can be the perfect way to make the most out of your backyard. Leveling that height difference can make for a smoother and more comfortable passage from the interior to the outside, something that you can take advantage while throwing a party or thinking about decor and furniture.

Of course, another evident (albeit secondary) reason for adding a deck is style. If you want to make a statement with every inch of your home, then a deck is definitely for you. Given the huge amount of materials available for deck’s construction and the almost infinite catalog of outdoor furniture, you can build a small stylish retreat or a fantastic platform oasis.

A new deck can even add an opportunity you didn’t have before – the space below it. If your deck is high enough, you can turn that space into a garden shed, a storage room or even an outdoor entertainment room. With minimal extra work, that space is a golden chance to add some more room to a crowded home, and all in the same job.

Finally, there’s the money aspect of it all. Sure, decks can be a little pricey (especially if you want some unique features in it) but decks have proven to be one of the most sound home improvement investments you can make. Experts say that you can recoup 70-90% of its costs if you decide to sell your home. How is that? Re-read the reasons described above and you’ll see why so many buyers are on the look for homes with decks.

A deck might sound like a ‘summery’ improvement to you but that’s not the case at all. You can enjoy your deck in the warm autumn days, in the chill winter mornings or any night you want, because the views from your home will improve so much you’ll never want to go inside again.
